No. 19 Walters State hits 16 3-pointers in 112-70 win over Southern Crescent Tech
GRIFFIN, GA – No. 19 Walters State shot the ball extremely well on Saturday afternoon against Southern Crescent Tech, going on for a 112-70 win.
With the victory, Walters State improved to 12-0 on the season. The 12 straight wins to start the season matches the best start for the Senators under Jerry Nichols. Nichols' 2023-24 Walters State team also won its first 12 games.
The Senators hit 16 3-pointers in the game, with Carter Webb hitting five of them and Malaki Brooks and Jamar Livingston each hitting four.
Leading the way in the scoring column for Walters State was Da'Mori Lytch with 17 points. Tyrese Stovall added 16 points, and Webb had 15. Other scorers for Walters State were Livingston with 14 points, Malaki Brooks with 12 points, Brian Carter with 11 points in his first game since Nov. 8, Jayden Nesbitt with 10 points, Jaquavious Wallace with six points, Taquez Butler with five points, Caiden Bauldwin with four points and Trae Rideau with two points.
Walters State started the game on fire, scoring the first 12 points. During the run, Lytch scored, Nesbitt made two buckets in a row and Livingston and Butler hit back-to-back 3-pointers. Following a Southern Crescent made basket, Brooks checked in the game and hit a three, and Lytch scored five straight to make it 20-4.
Southern Crescent scored to cut the lead to 14, but Walters State got two straight three's from Brooks, two Stovall baskets and a Wallace layup that made it 32-6. The two teams traded buckets from there, as Webb hit his first 3-pointer to make it 41-17 and Carter scored four straight to make it 47-29. The Senators ended the half strong, with a three from Livingston, a basket from Lytch and two free throws from Rideau that made it 58-34 at the break.
In the second half, Walters State again came out of the locker room red hot. Nesbitt scored four straight to open up the half, and Livingston hit a 3-pointer to make it 65-34 in the opening minute. Southern Crescent got a basket, but Lytch scored four in a row to make it 69-37.
Following a Tigers basket, Walters State rallied off eight more points thanks to a Nesbitt made shot, a Stovall basket, a Wallace bucket and a Carter made shot to make it 77-38. The two teams traded baskets for the next minute, but Carter scored, Brooks hit a three and Webb drilled back-to-back triples that made it 89-42.
From there, Walters State got five more points from Stovall, two more 3-pointers from Webb and a Carter 3-pointer that capped off the scoring and gave the Senators a 112-70 win.
