No. 14 Walters State pulls away late for 93-75 win over Southwest Tennessee
MORRISTOWN, TN – No. 14 Walters State closed strong in the final eight minutes on Monday evening against Southwest Tennessee, posting a 93-75 win over the Saluqis.
With the victory, the Senators improved to 21-1 overall and 13-1 in TCCAA play.
Tyrese Stovall led the way for Walters State in the game with 17 points, while Brian Carter finished with 15 points. Other scorers were Carter Webb with 14 points, Jamar Livingston with 12 points, Taquez Butler with 11 points, Malaki Brooks with 11 points, Jayden Nesbitt with eight points and Da'Mori Lytch with five points.
Walters State opened up a 12-5 lead early to start, thanks to five points from Butler, a three from Livingston, two free throws by Nesbitt and a basket by Carter. However, Southwest Tennessee controlled the next six minutes of the game and built a 17-16 lead with 11 minutes to go in the half.
From there, the Senators slowly began to wake back up as Brooks hit a three, Carter made a basket and two free throws and Livingston knocked in a trey to put Walters State in front, 26-17. Butler hit another three a minute later, and Webb hit a triple and Nesbitt scored to give the Senators a 34-23 advantage. The lead was 10 with 1:05 left after a Stovall dunk and Webb bucket, but Southwest scored the final four points of the half and made it 40-34 at the break.
The second half saw Southwest continue to stay close for the first 11 minutes of the half. The lead was down to 56-54 before Brooks hit a much-needed three and Stovall scored. Southwest made one final push and had the lead down to 64-59 with nine minutes left, but Lytch scored, Webb hit a three and Carter knocked in two free throws to make it 71-59.
The lead was 76-62 following a massive dunk from Lytch, and Webb hit two triples, sandwiched in between a Livingston three, to make it 89-69. Walters State closed strong in the final minute with points from Carter and Stovall, and Walters State took home the 93-75 win.
