14th-ranked Walters State shoots the lights out in 103-68 win over Chattanooga State
CHATTANOOGA, TN – Walters State used a 26-3 run in the final 7:30 of the first half on Wednesday against Chattanooga State to pull away and take a 103-68 win over the Tigers.
With the victory, the Senators improved to 22-1 overall and 14-1 in TCCAA play.
Carter Webb led the way for Walters State in the game with five 3-pointers and 21 points. Brian Carter added 14 points for the Senators, and Da'Mori Lytch finished with 12 points. Other scorers for Walters State were Jamar Livingston with 11, Malaki Brooks with 10, Tyrese Stovall with nine, Jayden Nesbitt with eight, Taquez Butler with eight, Trae Rideau with five, Jaquavious Wallace with three and Caiden Bauldwin with two.
Chattanooga State started strong in the game, scoring the first seven points. Butler hit a three to get the Senators on the board, and Webb and Brooks scored to cut the lead to 9-7. Chattanooga State continued to lead, though, and were up 16-11 before Lytch converted an and-one.
The Senators finally grabbed their first lead of the game at 22-21 on four straight from Webb. Chattanooga State took the lead back and then led 26-25 before Walters State took over. Webb started things with a 3-pointer, and after a Tigers free throw, Carter scored six straight to get the lead to 35-27. Livingston followed Carter's run with a 3-pointer, and Nesbitt hit two straight shots to make it 42-27 and force a Chattanooga State timeout.
The timeout couldn't stop the run, as Livingston hit a 3-pointer and Brooks and Webb scored to make it 49-27. The Tigers finally scored to end the 21-0 run, but Brooks hit two free throws with eight seconds left, and Walters State led 51-29 at the break.
In the second half, Livingston opened things with a 3-pointer and Rideau followed with a nifty layup. Nesbitt hit two straight floaters after to make it 60-34, and Carter hit a stepback 3-pointer at the shot clock buzzer and converted an and-one to make it a 68-43 game.
From there, the Senators kept firing and making. Lytch scored five straight to make it 73-45, and Butler drained a triple that made it 84-47. Wallace converted an and-one in the final minutes of the game, and Walters State easily took home a 103-68 win.
