Top-seeded Senators cruise to 94-63 win over Volunteer State in TCCAA/Region 7 Quarterfinals
GALLATIN, TN – Top-seeded Walters State had no trouble in its TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament opener on Saturday afternoon against ninth-seeded Volunteer State, coasting to a 94-63 win over the Pioneers.
With the win, the Senators advance to Monday's Semifinals against Chattanooga State at 1 pm ET.
The Senators shot 51.6% from the field in the game and made 13 3-pointers. Taquez Butler led the way with six three's and 18 points, while Brian Carter was a perfect 8-8 from the field and finished with 18 points and seven rebounds. Jamar Livingston also had 18 points.
Other contributors for the Senators were Jayden Nesbitt with 13 points and six rebounds, Carter Webb with 11 points, Jaquavious Wallace with six points and four rebounds, Tyrese Stovall with four points and seven rebounds, Da'Mori Lytch with three points, Malaki Brooks with three points, four rebounds and three assists, Trae Rideau with four assists and Caiden Bauldwin with four rebounds.
Nesbitt scored four points in the first two minutes to stake Walters State to a 6-2 lead. Vol State scored four straight to tie it, but Butler hit a three and Nesbitt converted an and-one to get the Senators advantage to 12-6. The Pioneers made a free throw after, but Walters State created separation with a 15-0 run. During the run, Butler hit a three, Carter scored four straight, Livingston knocked in a triple, Carter scored and Webb connected on a triple to make it 27-7.
The Pioneers finally broke the run with three straight, but Brooks hit a three and Carter scored again to make it 32-10. It was 35-13 following a Butler triple, and he hit another three 50 seconds later to make it 38-16. The Senators closed the half strong and led 46-24 at the break.
In the second, the Senators picked up where they left off, scoring the first 10 points. Nesbitt started it with a tough bucket, and Livingston hit two 3-pointers and scored eight straight to make it a 56-24 game. The lead continued to grow, as Carter scored four in a row, and Butler hit back-to-back 3-pointers that made it 68-33.
The lead would stay around 30 over the next several minutes, as Livingston scored five straight, Wallace hit a 3-pointer and Webb converted an and-one to make it 84-52. From there, Walters State had no troubles on its way to the 94-63 win.
In the final 20 minutes, Livingston led the way with 13 points, while Butler, Wallace, Carter and Webb each contributed six points.
