Top-seeded Walters State advances to TCCAA/Region 7 Championship
GALLATIN, TN – Top-seeded Walters State had no trouble advancing to the TCCAA/Region 7 Championship, grabbing a 95-64 win over fourth-seeded Chattanooga State on Monday afternoon.
With the win, the Senators advanced to 29-1 overall and will play in the Championship on Tuesday at 3 pm ET.
Malaki Brooks led the way for the Senators in the game with 16 points and four rebounds, while Taquez Butler finished with 16 points and five rebounds. Tyrese Stovall recorded a double-double, as well, with 11 points and 13 rebounds.
Other contributors for Walters State were Brian Carter with 15 points, Carter Webb with eight points, Da'Mori Lytch with seven points and five rebounds, Jamar Livingston with seven points, Trae Rideau with six points and four assists, Jayden Nesbitt with six points and Jaquavious Wallace with three points and four rebounds.
As a team, Walters State shot 31-62 from the field and collected 45 rebounds to Chatt State's 30 rebounds. The Senators turned the ball over just seven times.
Walters State got up 7-3 early in the contest, thanks to a Butler 3-pointer and Lytch dunk. Butler scored again to make it 9-6, and Nesbitt hit a shot in the lane to increase the lead to 11-6. The Tigers scored to cut things to three, but Walters State gained some separation with a 10-0 run. Carter scored three straight to open up the run, and Butler finished the run with two 3-pointers and seven points to make it 21-8.
Chattanooga State broke the run, but Wallace was there to shoot back with a 3-pointer that made it 27-11. The two teams traded buckets from there, until Livingston scored four straight to get the lead to 33-16 with nine minutes to go in the half. 17 is where the lead would hover for the rest of the half, and Carter scored to make it 49-32 at the break.
In the second half, the lead continued to be 17 until a 10-0 run from the Senators all but put the game away. During the run, Stovall scored, Rideau made a contested layup, Butler hit a three, Lytch made a free throw and Carter scored to make the score 63-38.
Walters State would continue to charge and led 71-50, before going on a 9-0 run that got the advantage to 30. Brooks hit a three to jumpstart the run, and Stovall hit three free throws. Lytch also scored and Livingston made a free throw that made it 80-50.
From there, the Senators cruised to the win. In the final five minutes, Brooks hit a three while Webb buried a triple and scored five points.
