MORRISTOWN, TN – Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh on Wednesday afternoon, Nyah Mullins stepped to the plate for Walters State and delivered.
Taking on No. 10 Gaston, Mullins worked a 2-0 count before doubling into the left-center gap. Lilly Killebrew, who was on first, raced around the bases and slid safely into home, giving Walters State the 5-4 walk off win. The Lady Senators fell, 11-1, in game one of the day.
With the split, the Lady Senators moved to 4-4 on the season.
GAME TWO: Walters State 5, No. 10 Gaston College 4
Before the walk off, the Lady Senators scored four runs in the second inning and got a great pitching outing from Allie Jones in game two.
Jones pitched a complete game for Walters State, allowing four runs on 12 hits, and struck out four.
At the plate, Addison Beech had three hits, while Jordan Pena and Mullins each collected two. Beech drove in two runs, as well.
Gaston struck first in the game, with two runs in the top of the second, but the Lady Senators responded with four in the bottom half of the inning. Lauren Ruehl led things off with a single and moved to second on a Camryn Allen walk. Brenna Hunley then singled to load the bases, and Allie Seritt walked to bring in a run. The game was tied when Brittanie Layton singled home Allen, and Beech gave Walters State the lead with a two-RBI double.
4-2 was the score until Gaston got a run in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game. Gaston had a chance to take the lead in the seventh, with runners on first and second with one out. But Jones picked up back-to-back fielder's choices to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, Alayna Ross singled to start the inning. Killebrew pinch ran for her, and when Mullins doubled, raced home for the winning run.
GAME ONE: No. 10 Gaston College 11, Walters State 1
In game one of the day, Gaston scored seven in the fourth and four in the seventh to take the win.
At the plate for the Lady Senators, Ross led the way with two hits, while Mullins drove in the lone run.
In the circle, Ruehl got the start and threw four innings. Ruehl gave up five runs, three earned, on nine hits and struck out two. Summer Smith also pitched and gave up three runs in 0.1 innings, while Jones threw 2.2 hitless innings. Carla Burge faced three batters, as well, and allowed three runs.
The Lady Senators' run in the game came in the bottom of the sixth when Beech singled, moved to second on a Jordan Pena walk, to third on a Ross single and scored on a Mullins sacrifice fly.
