Lady Senators open TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament with 10-2 win over Jackson State
COLUMBIA, TN – Third-seeded Walters State got its time in the TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament off to a great start, defeating sixth-seeded Jackson State 10-2 in six innings.
With the victory, the Lady Senators improved to 29-20 on the season. Walters State will take on second-seeded Chattanooga State on Sunday at 5:30 pm CT.
Addison Beech led the way for Walters State in the game, going 4-4 with a double and four runs scored. Kacey Pillion and Alayna Ross each homered in the game, as well, and both drove in four runs apiece.
In the circle, Summer Smith got the start and threw four innings. Smith gave up one run on five hits. Allie Jones replaced Smith in the fifth and threw two innings. She allowed one run on two hits.
Jackson State got a run in the top of the first, but Walters State tied the game back in the bottom of the inning when Beech singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on a Ross sacrifice fly.
In the third, the Lady Senators got out of a jam with a 5-3 double play and immediately responded with a run in the bottom of the inning. Beech again led things off with a single and stole second. Brianice Silguero then stepped up to the plate with two outs and singled, scoring Beech to make it 2-1.
In the fourth, Walters State added to its lead with four more runs. Jordan Pena got things going with a single, and Brittanie Layton reached on an error to put two on with two outs. That brought up Beech, and she singled to score Pena. Pillion was the next batter for Walters State, and she cleared the bases with a three-run home run that made it 6-1.
Jackson State picked up one more run in the top of the sixth, but Walters State ended the game with four runs in the bottom of the inning. As was the case all game, Beech got the rally started with a one-out double. Pillion singled her home to make it 7-1, and Silguero followed with a double. Ross then stepped to the plate and ended the game, smacking a three-run home run just over the fence.
