Griffin scores 38 in No. 12 Walters State’s 118-38 win over Jackson State
MORRISTOWN, TN – Terryauna Griffin plays a high level of basketball every time she steps on the court for the 12th-ranked Walters State women's basketball team, but over the last two weeks, Griffin has taken her game to another level.
On Saturday against Jackson State, Griffin scored 28 points in the first half and 38 for the game as the Lady Senators picked up a 118-38 win.
With the victory, the Lady Senators improved to 14-2 overall and 10-0 in TCCAA play.
Griffin started things in the first quarter, dropping in five 3-pointers and 19 points. Griffin scored nine more in the second quarter and 10 more in the second half. Griffin outscored Jackson State, 28-17, in the first half and tied their team's point total for the entire game.
Over her last four games, Griffin has scored 124 points.
However, as has been the case all season, it was a team effort in Saturday's win. Tierra Coleman scored a season-high 17 points for Walters State in the win, and Paradise Fisher finished with 16 points in the game, her second-highest point total of the season.
Other scorers in the game for the Lady Senators were Nyjah Gibbs with 15 points, Raegan Starks with eight points, Mariana Calero Zuniga with a season-high eight points and Malia Wilcox with six points.
The game was never in doubt for the Lady Senators, as they scored the first 21 points of the game. Wilcox hit a 3-pointer to start things, and Griffin followed with back-to-back triples. After Gibbs hit two free throws, Griffin and Starks traded baskets to make it 15-0. The run continued with four straight from Coleman, and Fisher ended it with a layup that put the score at 21-0.
Jackson State finally got on the board with a free throw, but Griffin answered with yet another 3-pointer. The lead got to 28-1 after layups from Mulholland-Natt and Gibbs, and it was 33-6 following Griffin's fourth 3-pointer of the quarter. Griffin hit one more 3-pointer to make it 36-6, and the Lady Senators led 40-7 after the opening 10 minutes.
The second quarter started with a Griffin jumper from the elbow, and she laid one in seconds later to make it 44-7. Griffin scored on yet another layup to make it 46-7, and the lead got to 50-7 when Starks scored. From there, Walters State kept the pace and led 66-17 at the break.
In the second quarter, Griffin scored nine more points while Fisher had six points and Gibbs added five points. Coleman had four points, as well.
In the third quarter, the Lady Senators scored 25 more points and held Jackson State to 11 points, leading 91-28. Mulholland-Natt was strong in the third quarter, scoring six points, and Griffin and Coleman each had five. Gibbs scored four points, and Wilcox hit her second 3-pointer of the game.
In the fourth, Walters State capped things off with 27 points and took the 118-38 win. Fisher had eight points in the final 10 minutes, and Calero Zuniga had six. Griffin scored four more, as did Coleman.
