Griffin and Gibbs lead 8th-ranked Lady Senators to 91-62 win over Volunteer State
GALLATIN, TN – Thanks to great efforts from Terryauna Griffin and Nyjah Gibbs, No. 8 Walters State remained undefeated in conference play on Saturday with a 91-62 win over Volunteer State.
With the victory, the Lady Senators improved to 17-2 overall and 13-0 in TCCAA play.
Griffin led the way in the game with her sixth 30+ point game of the season, finishing with 33 points and going 16-19 from the free-throw line. Gibbs was right behind Griffin in the scoring column, finishing with 27 points.
Other scorers for the Lady Senators were Malon Smith with eight points, Anaya Mulholland-Natt with seven points, Paradise Fisher with six points, Tahara Diallo with five points, Tierra Coleman with four points and Raegan Starks with one point.
"Terryauna and Nyjah gave us a big lift on the road and stepped up the way sophomores are supposed to when things get tough," Walters State coach Jasmin Coleman said. "Anaya was outstanding defensively, as usual. Any road win is a good win for us. Now, it's about recovery and getting ready for three big games ahead."
The two teams matched each other shot for shot to start the game, tied at 16 after the opening 10 minutes. Griffin had seven points in the opening quarter, while Gibbs had five.
In the second quarter, Gibbs took things over and helped pace Walters State to a 38-31 lead. Gibbs hit eight field goals in the quarter and had 16 of the Lady Senators' 22 points. Griffin and Mulholland-Natt each had three points.
The third quarter was when Griffin began to assert herself, scoring 12 points as Walters State held a 58-54 lead going to the final 10 minutes.
In the fourth, it was a total team effort as Walters State outscored Volunteer State, 33-8, to pick up the win. Griffin was a perfect 9-9 from the free-throw line in the final 10 minutes and scored 11 points. Smith scored six points in the final quarter, and Diallo hit a three and had five points.
