Griffin scores 38 in No. 7 Walters State’s 80-41 win over Dyersburg State
MORRISTOWN, TN – Terryauna Griffin continued to inch her way closer to the 1000 career point mark on Saturday, scoring 38 points in No. 7 Walters State's 80-41 win over the Dyersburg State.
With the victory, the Lady Senators improved to 20-2 overall and 16-0 in TCCAA play.
With her 38 points in Saturday's game, Griffin sits at 999 career points at Walters State. Griffin is now nine points away from breaking the Walters State school record for career points.
Along with Griffin on Saturday, Malia Wilcox finished with 10 points and Raegan Starks added eight points. Other scorers were Tierra Coleman with six points, Nyjah Gibbs with six points, Malon Smith with five points, Tahara Diallo with three points, Paradise Fisher with two points and Anaya Mulholland-Natt with two points.
Walters State scored the first seven points in the game, two coming from Wilcox, three coming from Griffin and two coming from Gibbs. Dyersburg hit a three to get on the board, but Griffin and Smith answered with back-to-back triples that made it 13-3. Dyersburg scored one more time in the quarter, but Smith and Wilcox scored in the final minute to make it 17-4 after one.
In the second, the lead was at 21-9 before Walters State went on an 8-0 run. Starks scored to start the run, and Fisher followed with a layup. Coleman got the next basket, and Griffin scored after to make it 29-9. However, Dyersburg scored the final eight points of the quarter, and Walters State's lead was 29-18 at the half.
In the third, Griffin began to assert herself, scoring five points in the first two and a half minutes to up the lead to 35-18. It was 39-23 after back-to-back baskets by Gibbs and Griffin, and Griffin converted an and-one with 3:20 left that made it 44-25. Griffin scored Walters State's final 10 points in the quarter to give them a 51-30 lead.
Griffin picked up where she left off in the fourth, scoring the first five points of the quarter to make it 56-30. Griffin concluded her scoring with seven points during a 9-0 run that made it 65-35. The Lady Senators cruised from there and picked up the 80-41 victory.
