5th-ranked Lady Senators finish perfect at home with 120-63 win over Motlow State
MORRISTOWN, TN – Terryauna Griffin, Nyjah Gibbs and Malon Smith combined for 75 points on Wednesday for No. 5 Walters State, and the Lady Senators grabbed a 120- 63 win over Motlow State on Homecoming.
With the win, the Lady Senators improved to 23-2 overall and 19-0 in TCCAA play. Walters State finished the season with a perfect 12-0 record at home.
Griffin led the way with 32 points, upping her career point total to 1,064 points. Along with Griffin, Gibbs scored 27 points and Malon Smith had 16 points. Other scorers were Tahara Diallo with 11 points, Tierra Coleman with 11 points, Raegan Starks with nine points, Paradise Fisher with seven points, Anaya Mulholland-Natt with four points and Malia Wilcox with three points.
Gibbs, Starks and Griffin scored to start the game for Walters State, but Motlow quickly rebounded and took a 15-11 lead with three minutes left in the quarter. However, the Lady Senators ended the quarter on a 13-2 run. Griffin started the run with three straight buckets, Coleman followed with a basket and Gibbs scored four in a row to make it 23-15. Motlow scored one final time in the quarter, but Smith hit a free throw to make it 24-17 after one.
In the second, the Lady Senators got the lead to 34-20 when Gibbs converted an and-one. Walters State got up 20 when Gibbs, Diallo and Griffin scored back-to-back-to-back, and Mulholland Natt hit two free throws that made it 46-28. Griffin hit a three later in the quarter, and it was 53-32 at the break. Griffin had 12 points in the second quarter, while Gibbs scored five.
Any chance of a Motlow comeback was put to rest when Gibbs scored four in a row, Starks scored and Griffin scored to make it 63-35. Motlow broke the run with a basket, but Smith scored four in a row, Griffin hit a three, Smith scored again and Diallo hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to make it 89-39. The Lady Senators scored 36 points in the quarter and held Motlow State to just seven.
Diallo hit two more 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, and Walters State was off again with 31 points. Wilcox hit a three, as well, and Gibbs had six points. Eight players scored for Walters State in the fourth quarter, and they took the 120-63 win.
