5th-ranked Lady Senators finish perfect in conference play with 87-32 win over Jackson State
JACKSON, TN – For the first time since the 2018-19 season, the Walters State women's basketball team finished undefeated in TCCAA play.
On Saturday against Jackson State, the Lady Senators used a 33-point effort from Nyjah Gibbs to grab an 87-32 win. With the win, Walters State finished 20-0 in TCCAA play.
Gibbs scored all but three of Walters State's points in the second quarter, and her 33 points were a career-high. Along with Gibbs, Terryauna Griffin finished with 24 points to up her career point total to 1,088. Other scorers in the game for the Lady Senators were Tierra Coleman with 10 points, Malon Smith with eight points, Raegan Starks with six points, Malia Wilcox with four points and Anaya Mulholland-Natt with two points.
It was an early lead for Walters State, scoring 19 points and going up 19-11 after the opening quarter. Griffin hit a 3-pointer and had seven points, while Gibbs had six points and Starks added four points.
In the second, Gibbs scored 14 points, and Walters State held Jackson State to just seven points. Gibbs made five field goals and four free throws, and the Lady Senators were up 36-18 at the break.
The third quarter saw Griffin hit two more 3-pointers and score 11 points, while Gibbs added seven more. As a team, Walters State scored 26 points and led 62-27 going to the fourth.
In the fourth, Jackson managed just five points against Walters State's ferocious defense. Smith scored all eight of her points in the fourth quarter, and Gibbs finished with six more points as Walters State took the 87-32 win.

Walters State will now travel to Gallatin, TN next weekend for the TCCAA/Region 7 Tournament. The Lady Senators will be the No. 1 seed and will play on Sunday, March 8, at 1 pm ET.
